Igniting the Wonder: The Magic of Childhood at Day Pond

One of my absolute favorite parts of performing at private events, especially birthday parties, is witnessing the pure, unfiltered wonder in a child’s eyes when they experience magic for the first time. It’s a feeling that’s deeply personal to me because it takes me back to a pivotal moment in my own childhood, right here in Connecticut.

I was just five or six years old, attending a summer camp program at Day Pond. Like any other day, I was full of energy and excitement, but that day was destined to be anything but ordinary. As the camp gathered around for a special performance, I was called on stage by the magician to help with a trick. Little did that magician know, the simple act of pouring milk into one of my ears—only to magically have it come out the other—would change the trajectory of my life forever.

Standing in front of everyone, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement, but what I remember most was the sheer wonder that washed over me as the magic unfolded. That single moment ignited something deep within me—a fascination and joy that I’ve carried with me ever since. It was the spark that set me on the path to becoming a magician myself.

Now, as I perform as Magic by Derek at birthday parties and other private events across Connecticut, I strive to recreate that same sense of wonder for every child I encounter. It’s this personal connection to magic that drives me to be the best magician I can be, sharing the joy and amazement that was once shared with me.

Every time I step on stage, whether it’s in a backyard, a community center, or any other venue, I think back to that summer day at Day Pond. I’m reminded of how one simple magic trick can open up a world of possibilities and inspire a lifelong passion. That’s the magic I aim to bring to every event I perform at, ensuring that each child leaves with a memory they’ll cherish—just as I did all those years ago.
